In a significant achievement, two BI students were awarded the 2024-25 Endowed Graduate Fellowships given by the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

The Biocomplexity Institute, Darden School of Business, and Data Science Institute in partnership with the Northern Virginia Technology Council have officially launched the Data Science for the Public Good (DSPG) Forum with three cornerstone programs commencing this summer. 

Last Friday marked the launch of the University of Virginia’s Data Science for the Public Good Distinguished Speaker Series with Martin O’Malley, former mayor of Baltimore and governor of Maryland, as its inaugural speaker.

In early June, 16 University of Virginia undergraduate students joined the Biocomplexity Institute’s Network Systems Science and Advanced Computing division (NSSAC) to take on some of our world’s most challenging issues relating to health, infrastructure, and the environment.

DSPG Program Expansion Advances Data Science Application in Support of Rural Prosperity

Over the last five summers, students from across the country have come together at the Biocomplexity Institute’s Arlington, Va. location for the Data Science for the Public Good (DSPG) Young Scholars program – an 11-week immersive research program through which students gain world-class, hands-on professional experience combining data science and public service. This year, as the world continues to evolve due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program has followed suit, adopting an entirely virtual format for the first time.

A partnership with the University of Virginia and a successful pilot program helped the Kodluyoruz Association attract a grant from the U.S. Embassy in Turkey, giving the nonprofit an opportunity to continue to cultivate a Data Science for the Public Good Young Scholars program in the municipalities of Istanbul and Ankara.

DSPG Young Scholars, now in its 10th year, brings undergraduate and graduate students together from across the country for 10 weeks throughout the summer to engage with research projects that address local, state, and federal government challenges around critical social issues.

Students from across the country are using data to help solve real problems impacting communities in the DMV and beyond.

Excitement filled the air at the 2023 Computing for Global Challenges (C4GC) Symposium on Thursday, July 27th. Over the span of eight weeks, students representing diverse collegiate institutions worked with mentors from the Biocomplexity Institute (BI) on projects embracing real-world challenges and questions.
