Lauren (Laurie) Coble serves as the Chief Operating Officer and Director of the Administrative Division of the Biocomplexity Institute and Initiative at the University of Virginia. Since her arrival in September 2018, Laurie has been instrumental in the creation of the Biocomplexity Institute and Initiative at UVA, assisting the Executive Director in strategic planning for and operational implementation of the institute. Laurie oversees all business operations managing the institute’s financial operations, grants and contracts administration, human resources, communications, and facilities design, function and operations strategy.
Laurie has served the Commonwealth of Virginia for more than 33 years. She has held leadership positions in finance and administration at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (“Virginia Tech”), where she served most recently as Chief Operating Officer of the Biocomplexity Institute of Virginia Tech.
During Laurie’s tenure at Virginia Tech, she was an integral member of the leadership team, and helped lead the university’s financial, administrative, and operational affairs as Assistant to the Executive Vice President and Chief Business Officer, Director of Business Management, and Director of Business and Administrative Services. Early in her career, Laurie served as the Business and Real Estate Manager for Virginia Tech Foundation, Inc. and Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, Inc. providing direction and oversight of the planning, construction and renovation of capital facilities.
Laurie holds a master of business administration degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a bachelor of science degree in finance from Old Dominion University.
She has several affiliations, including membership in the Society of Research Administrators International; National Council of University Research Administrators; and National Association of College and University Business Officers.
With a four-story, stately steel frame in the foreground, construction workers hoisted and placed the final steel beam atop the structure at Town Center Four at the University of Virginia Research Park, the future home of the Biocomplexity Institute.
One of the University of Virginia’s most ambitious research efforts is beginning to take shape. In the past several months, UVA announced and introduced the Biocomplexity Institute and Initiative, which commenced operations in the UVA Research Park in September 2018, and most recently, appointed five individuals to join Executive Director Dr. Christopher L. Barrett on the senior leadership team.
