Dr. Andrei Bura is a Research Scientist in the Mathematical Biocomplexity Division of the Institute. His background is pure mathematics with an emphasis on algebraic topology and combinatorics having received his PhD in mathematics from Virginia Tech. His current research focuses on developing mathematical frameworks that aid in answering data-driven questions in bio-informatics and mathematical biology. Together with his colleagues he has studied and published on general weighted (co)-homological theories for complexes endowed with additional discrete algebraic data which were then applied in the context of riboswitches as well as that of higher order dissimilarities in genetic alignments, illuminating novel dependencies in structured biological data.
